Three training sessions on IEC 61850 communication during spring 2025

As a result of the market response to our newest offer of the IEC 61850 hands-on trainings during April, May and June 2025 we organized three training sessions on the IEC 61850 communication.

The first two sessions were organized as private events ordered by our customers. The June event was our regular open training session organized in Gdańsk each year since 2014.

A key topic of the IEC 61850 training courses in 2025 was the process of system engineering defined in the IEC 61850 standard, with the SCL file processing performed in co-operation between the product specific IED configuration tools (ICT) and the IED product neutral system configuration tool (SCT). This process, resulting in a complete system configuration description in one SCD file, was discussed in comparison to the frequently applied "short-cut" approach in which only ICTs are used and create a set of several proprietary CID files.

The theory was followed by an exercise of building a system configuration description (SCD file) from the descriptions of component IEDs (ICD files) and based on requirements on the data transfer using client-server and GOOSE communications. Our newest tool product, INFO TECH 61850 SCD Builder, was introduced for this purpose. Then the created SCD file was used to simulate the system devices using INFO TECH 61850 SCL Runner toolset and INFO TECH 61850 Avenue client tool. The created GOOSE binding and the resulting GOOSE data flow could be then visualized and monitored using INFO TECH 61850 GOOSE System Viewer tool.

These three training sessions gathered 35 participants from 9 companies and institutions - thank you very much!

Our courses collected the following ratings in the evaluation scale from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest):

Session in week 16:

Training material rated 4.6

Competence of instructors rated 4.9

Significance to participant's work rated 3.7

Novelty of acquired information rated 4.7

General evaluation of the training rated 4.4

Session in week 22:

Training material rated 4.9

Competence of instructors rated 4.9

Significance to participant's work rated 3.8

Novelty of acquired information rated 4.3

General evaluation of the training rated 4.4

Session in week 23:

Training material rated 5.0

Competence of instructors rated 4.9

Significance to participant's work rated 3.6
