During the IEC 61850 training sessions in May and June 2024 we applied for hands-on exercises the pre-release version of our newest tool product, IEC 61850 based System Configuration Tool for bottom-up design approach. INFO TECH 61850 SCD Builder tool allows to create system configuration description (SCD file) from the descriptions of component IEDs (ICD files) and in accordance with the system requirements on client-server communication, GOOSE communication and SV communication.
61850 SCD Builder can visualize the system under configuration in the IED models view, in the network view and in the GOOSE/SV data flow view.
All published editions of the IEC 61850 standard are supported: Ed.1, Ed.2, Ed.2.1 (Am.1Ed.2). The functional naming is supported.
We plan to offer commercial licenses to 61850 SCD Builder tool starting from September 2024 (after the summer vacation). The promotional price will be quoted till the end of 2024.

As a result of market response to our newest offer of IEC 61850 hands-on trainings during May and June 2024 we organized three IEC 61850 training sessions.
The first session on May 21-23 was organized as a traditional open IEC 61850 training course taking place in LINTE2 Laboratory in co-operation with Gdansk University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering. All seats were booked ! Thus, for the additional interested customers we arranged two private training sessions in June.
A special topic of the IEC 61850 training course in 2024 was an exercise of building a system configuration description (SCD file) from the descriptions of component IEDs (ICD files) and based on requirements on the data transfer using client-server and GOOSE communications. Our newest tool product, INFO TECH 61850 SCD Builder, was introduced for this purpose. Then the created SCD file was used to simulate the system devices using INFO TECH 61850 SCL Runner toolset and INFO TECH 61850 Avenue client tool. The created GOOSE binding and the resulting GOOSE data flow could be then visualized and monitored using INFO TECH 61850 GOOSE System Viewer tool.
These three training sessions gathered 40 participants from 7 companies and institutions - thank you very much!
Our courses collected the following ratings in the evaluation scale from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest):
Session in week 21:
Training material rated 4.9
Competence of instructors rated 4.9
Significance to participant's work rated 3.7
Novelty of acquired information rated 4.1
General evaluation of the training rated 4.0
Session in week 23:
Training material rated 4.8
Competence of instructors rated 5.0
Significance to participant's work rated 4.0
Novelty of acquired information rated 3.7
General evaluation of the training rated 4.2
Session in week 25:
Training material rated 4.5
Competence of instructors rated 4.8
Significance to participant's work rated 3.8
Novelty of acquired information rated 4.5
General evaluation of the training rated 4.3

During the year 2023 the source code license to INFO TECH IEC 61850 Software Library was purchased by 1 new customer and 2 new customers decided to license our binary libraries for MS Windows platforms. While 5 of our long term customers-licensees purchased upgrades of the licensed INFO TECH IEC 61850 Software Library to ensure the proper support of Ed.2/Ed.2.1 in their products.
It is also worth to mention that the cybersecurity extensions of such protocols like IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-104 are no more the subjects of debates only! Upon the orders of our customers INFO TECH prepared the implementation of secure communication for both ends.
The licenses to our testing and simulation applications 61850 Avenue, 61850 GOOSE System Viewer, 61850 SCL Runner and tools from the ProTester family were acquired by 7 new customers while 30 customers purchased software upgrades and additional licenses.
Looking forward to the continuation of good co-operation during the year 2024 !

During autumn 2023 our customers requested 3 private training sessions on the IEC 61850 communication in power systems. These sessions gathered 24 participants and each of the courses was led by two instructors from INFO TECH.
In our conference room we set up a training system for demonstration and hands-on execises: 3 protection relays with IEC 61850 server & GOOSE interface and supporting PRP redundancy, a relay with Modbus slave interface connected to the IEC 61850 based network via our IT Gateway module, a simulator of SCADA with the IEC 61850 client interface, INFO TECH testing and simulation tools such as 61850 Avenue toolset, 61850 GOOSE System Viewer, 61850 SCL Runner toolset.
Upon request of our customers the special focus was put on the following topics:
- communication testing of all protocols defined in the IEC 61850 standard,
- communication supervision during the substation system operation,
- SCL based system engineering with creation of an SCD file and configuration of IEDs.
Though, a significant part of the time was dedicated also to the cybersecurity extensions of the IEC 61850 based communication, as specified in the IEC 62351 standard. INFO TECH tool programs together with the prepared set of certificates allowed for an exercise of setting up a secure client-server communication using TLS for encryption and ACSE for authentication.
Our courses collected the following ratings in the evaluation scale from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest):
Training material rated 4.9
Competence of instructors rated 4.9
Significance to participant's work rated 4.4
Novelty of acquired information rated 4.0
General evaluation of the training rated 4.8
We truly enjoyed running these sessions with particpants so motivated to study and discuss the training issues and give us feedback from their own experience.
